For our first edition of The Edit, we couldn't think of a better place to start than the living room at the Glenelg Retreat. This was such a special project for us; it wasn't only about designing a beautiful space, but about supporting a young, growing family.

When we first walked through this home with Abbey and Sam, it wasn't the fireplace or the light that stayed with us, it was how much they wanted this house to feel like theirs. A place their boys could grow up in, that held up to real life, and still felt like coming home at the end of a long day. This living room became the heart of that space.

Every piece here was chosen slowly, and with them in mind. We'd love for you to step inside and see it for yourself.

This room is part of a complete character home transformation. If you'd love to see the full story; from concept to finished space, explore Glenelg Retreat in our portfolio.

Linen sofa with textured cushions and ceramic lamp beside a travertine stone feature wall, Glenelg Retreat living room by Young & Co Interiors

The foundation of this living space, chosen for its relaxed silhouette, generous proportions and beautifully soft linen upholstery. It brings an effortless sense of comfort while maintaining a refined, timeless aesthetic.

01 | Toorak Sofa

Every room needs an anchor, and this sofa became ours.

Rather than choosing something overly structured or trend-driven, we wanted a piece that invited people to truly live in the space. Deep seats, oversized cushions and a relaxed profile make it equally suited to quiet mornings, family movie nights or entertaining friends.

It’s one of those rare pieces that feels elevated without feeling precious.

Why we chose it

We paired the natural linen upholstery with warm timber, textured wool and soft neutral tones to create a layered palette that feels calm and inviting.

Its generous proportions allow it to comfortably accommodate the whole family while still feeling light within the room thanks to its soft curves and low profile.

Design notes

  • Upholstery: Linen blend

  • Colour: Natural

  • Configuration: 3 Seater + Ottoman

Sculptural timber coffee table styled with a black ceramic vase and books beside a travertine stone fireplace, Glenelg Retreat living room

Handcrafted from reclaimed timber, the Fulani Coffee Table introduces warmth, texture and character through beautifully organic materials and sculptural proportions.

02 | Fulani Coffee Table

Every living space benefits from a piece with soul.

The reclaimed timber celebrates natural imperfections, ensuring every table feels unique. It balances the softness of the linen sofa while grounding the entire room with rich texture and visual weight.

Rather than competing for attention, it quietly brings everything together.

Why we chose it

The chunky legs and hand-worked timber create an understated statement, adding depth without overpowering the surrounding furniture.

We styled it simply with books, sculptural accessories and a matte black vessel to allow the craftsmanship of the timber remain the hero.

Design notes

  • Solid reclaimed timber

  • Handcrafted finish

Ceramic table lamp, Byredo candle and snake plant styled on a timber side table, Glenelg Retreat living room detail

Soft, sculptural and beautifully understated, this lamp introduces warmth and ambience while acting as a functional layer within the living room.

03 | Noosa Floor Lamp

Lighting should never feel like an afterthought.

This piece was selected for it’s organic form and textured base, adding subtle contrast to the surrounding natural materials without introducing visual clutter.

It creates a gentle pool of light that instantly makes the room feel more relaxed and welcoming.

Why we chose it

Positioned beside the sofa, it softens the harder architectural elements within the room while adding another layer of texture through the linen shade and ceramic base.

Its scale feels generous without dominating the space.

Design notes

  • Linen shade

  • Textured ceramic base

Living room styling with timber coffee table, stone fireplace and woven storage trunk, Glenelg Retreat renovation by Young & Co Interiors

Quietly grounding the entire room, this oversized wool rug provides softness underfoot while introducing subtle texture that ties every element together.

04 | Marley Wool Rug

One of the most common mistakes we see is selecting a rug that is too small.

We intentionally chose an oversized rug to anchor the furniture and create a greater sense of scale throughout the room. Its soft woven texture adds warmth without competing with the surrounding finishes.

Why we chose it

The tonal palette allows the natural timber, linen upholstery, stone wall and fireplace to remain the focus while introducing another layer of tactile interest.

Design notes

  • Wool blend

  • Handwoven

  • Size: 3300 × 2400mm
